Washington Nationals reliever Sammy Solis began warming in the bullpen shortly after Greg Holland walked the first batter he had faced in 17 days.
Holland, released by the St. Louis Cardinals after amassing a 7.92 ERA in 25 innings this year, had signed with Washington earlier Tuesday and was sent to the mound in the seventh inning at Nationals Park to protect a six-run lead over the Atlanta Braves.
After serving up a walk to Braves catcher Tyler Flowers, the 32-year-old righty battled back to strike out the next three batters to retire the side in his first relief appearance with the Nationals.
