PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The governor of Rhode Island highlighted the diversity of her selections in announcing her six candidates for open judicial seats across the state.
Democratic Gov. Gina Raimondo unveiled the six lawyers she has selected for lifetime appointments at a Monday ceremony. The Providence Journal reports three of the six nominees are black and three are women.
Raimondo says it is important to have judges who look like the people that appear before the court. She credited Judicial Nominating Commission Chairwoman Sally Dowling with cultivating a diverse pool of judicial applicants.

The commission will be choosing candidates for three more seats in the coming months.
