SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - The Latest on the arrest of a California lawmaker (all times local):

5:30 p.m.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says state lawmaker Joaquin Arambula was arrested in connection with a child cruelty report made at a local elementary school.

Dyer says officials at Dailey Elementary Charter School reported a potential case of child abuse after a child came into an office on Monday afternoon with an injury. Dyer would not describe the injury or the relationship between Arambula and the victim.

Arambula has three young daughters.

Dyer says the child said Arambula had inflicted the injury, which occurred Sunday night.

Arambula was arrested and transported to police headquarters. He was released shortly after because the alleged crime is a misdemeanor. Dyer says the child’s injury did not rise to the level of a felony.

A California state lawmaker has been arrested on suspicion of child cruelty.

Fresno Police Department Lt. Mark Hudson said Tuesday that Democratic Assemblyman Joaquin Arambula of Fresno was arrested on suspicion of a misdemeanor charge of willful cruelty to a child.

The Fresno Bee reports Arambula was cited and released Monday.

Hudson did not provide more details on what led to the arrest.

Arambula is a former emergency room physician who won a 2016 special election to represent part of Fresno and the surrounding rural areas.

His legislative biography says Arambula lives in Fresno with his wife and three daughters. His father Juan Arambula was a state Assemblyman in the early 2000s.

Arambula spokeswoman Felicia Matlosz says he is “a committed father who wants what is best for his children.”
