RENO, Nev. (AP) - The Washoe County School Board has voted to close the state’s first charter school at the end of the school year.
The Reno Gazette-Journal reported on its web site Wednesday the school board voted Tuesday night to close I Can Do Anything Charter High School.
The school with 197 students was created in south Reno in 1998.
School district officials cited low graduation rates, declining student enrollment and continuing financial challenges as the main reasons for the pending closure.
The school’s graduation rate was 31 percent last year compared to a district-wide rate of 84 percent.
Superintendent Traci Davis says the Nevada Department of Education warned that if the district failed to take action, it could result in the district losing charter status for all schools district-wide.
