PERRY, Ga. (AP) - A Georgia man has been convicted of killing a man who tried to serve as a mentor.

The Macon Telegraph reported a jury in Perry convicted 25-year-old Daniel Maurice Thomas of Warner Robbins of murder and aggravated assault.

Prosecutors say 55-year-old Elliott S. Mizell was shot and killed in his home in Warner Robbins on Dec. 9, 2017.

Thomas could be sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Police said Mizell’s house was in disarray when his body was found. A sliding glass door was open and gloves with blood on them were found in the backyard.

Thomas’ mother had told investigators that Mizell had been mentoring the man and had allowed him to sleep in the house at least once previously.

Thomas contended the shooting was an accident.
