NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A victim in an apparent homicide-suicide had been an employee of a sheriff’s office in Tennessee.

News outlets report a preliminary investigation showed that 49-year-old Kirk Williams shot 53-year-old Lawanda Steele-Williams in the kitchen of their home before killing himself. Steele-Williams worked for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office as an offender re-entry center correctional officer.

Officers responded to the scene after Steele-Williams’ daughter went to check on her Sunday. Steele-Williams wasn’t answering her cell phone, which her daughter could hear ringing inside. Arriving officers found the newlywed couple dead on the kitchen floor with gunshot wounds to their heads. Deputies say a semi-automatic pistol was between them.

Chief of Staff Karla West says their thoughts are with the Steele-Williams‘ family as they come to terms with this horrible news.
