NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (AP) - Fire officials say a large fire has destroyed two homes in Massachusetts, leaving three people hospitalized and 15 others displaced.

First responders were called to the scene in New Bedford around 3 p.m. Monday. Fire Chief Scott Kruger says the fire was roaring when he got to the scene, and large amounts of water were necessary to put out the blaze.

Fire officials believe everyone was able to escape the two homes alive. Those hospitalized are being treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control around 6 p.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
