LA MESA, Calif. (AP) - Firefighters carried a man in his 70s to safety as flames spread through his apartment near San Diego.

Officials say a neighbor reported seeing black smoke seeping out from under the door of a unit at a complex in La Mesa Tuesday.

Crews found a fire blazing in the living room and the man trapped in a bedroom.

Heartland Fire & Rescue Department Capt. Sonny Saghera says a previous medical condition left the man unable to walk. Firefighters carried him to an ambulance and he was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Saghera says the man lives with his wife, who was not home at the time of the fire.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reports the fire caused about $100,000 in damage to the apartment and its contents. The cause is under investigation.
