RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A woman has entered an Alford plea for slashing her former psychology professor with a box cutter.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Tuesday 25-year-old Brittany Leigh Burfield entered the plea to a charge of unlawful wounding for the Feb. 23 slashing of Reynolds Community College professor Douglas Gava.

An Alford plea means a defendant doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges there’s enough evidence for a conviction.

Henrico County assistant commonwealth’s attorney Tania Kregar says Gava went to his office after a lecture and heard the door slam. Kregar says he looked over to see Burfield coming at him with the blade.

Burfield’s attorney, Linda Scott, said the defendant maintains she used the box cutter to get away from Gava, who she said tried to keep her from leaving his office.

Gava was never charged with a crime.
