President Trump said Monday that Democrats are prioritizing noncitizens in shutting down the government.

“The Democrats are turning down services and security for citizens in favor of services and security for non-citizens. Not good!” Mr. Trumptweeted.

“Democrats have shut down our government in the interests of their far left base. They don’t want to do it but are powerless!” the president added.

Democrats pushed for a bill protecting Dreamers — those brought to the U.S. illegally as children — as a prerequisite to support a spending bill. Mr. Trump and the Republicans said that any Dreamer protection plan also needs to include border security, but the bipartisan deal died after Mr. Trump said the border protections didn’t go far enough.

Both parties have since taken to accusing the other of launching the government shutdown. Talks continued through the weekend with no result.
