CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The U.S. Attorney’s office says a West Virginia man who used a gun to steal a taxi has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Officials say 29-year-old Marshall Leroy Saunders was a suspect in an unrelated crime when police observed him entering a taxi in Vienna on Oct. 6, 2016.

A release from the U.S. Attorney says Saunders admitted that he forced the driver out of the vehicle at gunpoint and fled police, driving at speeds up to 110 miles (180 kilometers) per hour.

Saunders abandoned the taxi in Parkersburg, and hid in a wooded area until he was caught by police.

Saunders had pleaded guilty to federal carjacking charges.
