The Washington Redskins have an agreement to trade for Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith, according to the Kansas City Star.

The move comes as Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins will hit free agency this offseason. Smith, 33, is entering the final year of his contract next season and is scheduled to make $17 million.

The Star reported that the two teams have an agreement in place, but such a move can’t be made until the new NFL calendar year starts on March 14.

Smith, the former No.1 overall pick in 2005, threw for a career-high 4,092 yards last season and 26 touchdowns. The Chiefs made the playoffs, but were eliminated in the Wild Card round against the Tennessee Titans.
