A new Monmouth University poll out Wednesday shows Republicans gained 15 points in the generic congressional ballot test in the past month.
Forty-seven percent of those polled say they’d lean towards a Democratic candidate in their district, compared to 45 percent who said they’d support a Republican. This compares to last month when Republicans were down 15 points, with 51 percent saying they’d support Democrats, compared to 36 who said they’d support Republicans.
President Trump also saw a big swing in his approval rating, which now sits at 42 percent compared to 32 percent from December. His disapproval rating remains high, however, as 50 percent say they are unhappy with his job performance, compared to 56 percent last month.
Over half the country — 55 percent — say he is “somewhat successful” at pushing Congress to move on his legislative goals, while 41 percent say he has not been successful in this effort.
The majority of polling for this poll was done before Mr. Trump delivered his State of the Union address Tuesday, but nearly two weeks after a brief government shutdown.
The poll was taken via telephone Jan. 28-30 among 806 adults with a +/- 3.6 percent margin of error.
