Former Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said Thursday that Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with a Russian official is “shocking.”

“It’s rather shocking to me that responsible people would even accept such a meeting, given the stated purpose in that email,” Mr. Johnson said on CNN.

Mr. Trump Jr. took a meeting with a Russian official who claimed to have compromising information on Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. The email that led to the meeting was made public after Mr. Trump Jr. posted it on Twitter. He said that meeting turned out to be unproductive as the discussion turned to the issue of Russian adoptions.

But Mr. Johnson said that any such meeting with a foreign agent or government was problematic.

“Federal campaigns are not supposed to be accepting assistance from foreign citizens and from foreign governments,” Mr. Johnson said.

The meeting as been one of the focal points of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into possible collusion between the Russian government and the Trump campaign.
