PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Nine people have been injured, including a firefighter trapped under a collapsed roof, after a fire destroyed three triple-decker homes in Providence’s Olneyville neighborhood.

The fire broke out just after 3 a.m. Sunday at 106 Bowdoin St.

Battalion Chief Stephen Capracotta told the Providence Journal by the time crews started battling the blaze, it was burning in three buildings.

Single-digit temperatures and strong winds made the job of fighting the fire even tougher. It took about five hours to bring the fire under control.

One firefighter, Dan Rinaldi, became trapped when the roof of 114 Bowdoin collapsed. Capracotta said it took about 20 minutes to free Rinaldi, who was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

A second firefighter and seven residents were treated for smoke inhalation.
