Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez added a Stalinist flavor to Bernie Sanders’ and Elizabeth Warren’s numerous socialist proposals (“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won’t say if she’d back Nancy Pelosi for speaker,” Web, July 22). She wants government-guaranteed jobs. In his days of building socialism, Stalin was more direct than Ms. Ocasio-Cortez.

Article 12 of the 1936 Soviet Constitution, known as the Stalinist Constitution, said: “In the U.S.S.R. work is a duty and a matter of honor for every able-bodied citizen, in accordance with the principle: He who does not work, neither shall he eat.” It appears that Stalin, a former seminarian, fell back on the Bible in writing Article 12 of his Constitution. The Second Epistle of Paul to the Thessalonians read: “For even if we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”

One must wonder whether Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s supporters would find the religious origin of her proposal offensive.
