The New York Post framed Monday’s news that Barry Trotz has resigned as head coach of the Washington Capitals as an “intriguing move for Isles.”
Never mind that the New York Islanders did not have anything to do with the move, at least not that we know of yet.
But the Islanders are the only NHL team that does not currently have a head coach, and now the coach who just won the Stanley Cup is on the open market.
The Islanders’ new president of hockey operations and general manager, Lou Lamoriello, fired head coach Doug Weight earlier this month. He promised the team would hire “the best person available,” a list that now includes Trotz.
Trotz coached the Nashville Predators for 15 seasons and the Capitals for four, a short tenure culminating in this season’s Stanley Cup championship. His 762 wins are the fifth-most by a head coach in NHL history.
The Islanders finished 35-37-10 in 2017-18, the middle of the pack in the Eastern Conference but a distant 17 standings points out of the wild card race.
