LA MESA, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a woman and her 2-year-old son in a stroller were mauled by two dogs that escaped from a backyard kennel and jumped a fence near San Diego.

The Union-Tribune reports the woman was walking with her two children Thursday morning in La Mesa when the two Rottweilers attacked the boy in the stroller.

As the woman tried to free her son, one of the dogs knocked her to the ground and began to bite her.

Neighbors rushed to help and the dogs’ owner managed to pull the animals away.

The newspaper says both victims were hospitalized with injuries considered serious but not life-threatening. The 2-year-old will need surgery.

His 8-year-old sister was not hurt.

Both dogs were seized and quarantined.
