AVON, N.C. (AP) - Officials with the National Park Service say a New York man died after he was caught in rip currents with other swimmers off the North Carolina Outer Banks.

The park service said Hatteras Island Rescue Squad was already bringing swimmers back to shore Thursday before responding to a 911 call reporting multiple swimmers in distress in the Atlantic Ocean at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. At least six other people were brought to the beach.

The victim was identified as a 48-year-old visiting from Sayville, New York. The park service said rescuers administered CPR on the beach, but to no avail. The man’s name hasn’t been released.

It was the fourth swimming-related fatality off the seashore this year, compared to seven last year and eight in 2016.
