SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Protesters faced down sweltering heat in Illinois to protest the policy of President Donald Trump’s administration to separate children from parents entering the U.S. illegally.
Speakers on a stage in downtown Chicago Saturday were surrounded by crowds chanting “Si se puede!” or “Yes, you can!” A march to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Chicago headquarters followed.
Margo Chavez-Easley is a 39-year-old Chicago resident who emigrated from Guatemala as a child. She said that as a U.S. citizen and immigrant she feels a “mix of pride and shame.”
Trump ended the separation policy last week but questions about subsequent procedures remain.
Seven activist groups planned a rally Saturday in downtown Champaign. Rally organizer MoveOn.org had also announced protests in Barrington, Downers Grove, Frankfort, Highland Park and Rockford.
