The news of President Trump’s picks for secretary of State and director of the CIA has drawn negative responses from a few deviant Republicans and most obstructionist Democrats. These individuals cite the supposed ties to torture of nominees Mike Pompeo and Gina Haspel.

After the shock and damage from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, enhanced interrogation procedures, including waterboarding, were approved by the president and considered legal by the Justice Department. People involved with enhanced interrogation fulfilled their responsibilities and performed approved procedures, and they did not kill anyone.

Sen. Rand Paul has a closed mind and will not accept facts that do not agree with his interpretations. When Sen. John McCain, who fulfilled his duty as a Navy pilot, and other veterans now serving in Congress killed enemy combatants, did that disqualify them from being elected and serving? Certainly not. And President Bill Clinton initiated the “extraordinary rendition” of individuals to nations known to practice torture much more severe than waterboarding.

Mr. Pompeo and Ms. Haspel are highly qualified nominees who deserve the support of Republicans and Democrats. In their new roles they will provide better diplomacy and protection for our country.
