WASHINGTON (AP) - President Donald Trump’s former campaign chairman is asking a judge in Virginia to dismiss bank fraud and tax evasion charges filed against him.

Attorneys for Paul Manafort filed a motion Tuesday that mirrors arguments he made in a related criminal case in Washington and in a civil lawsuit he filed in January challenging the authority of special counsel Robert Mueller.

Manafort’s lawyers argue that Mueller lacks the authority to prosecute Manafort since the bulk of the allegations predate the 2016 presidential campaign and aren’t directly linked to Russia. Mueller was appointed to investigate any links between Trump associates and Russia, as well as other matters that arise out of his investigation.

Justice Department lawyers in the civil case have said Mueller is well within his authority to bring the case.
