BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Federal investigators are at a South Carolina airport to investigate the crash of an aircraft similar to a helicopter.

Beaufort County sheriff’s deputies said 69-year-old Sam Dollenmeier was killed when his gyrocopter crashed around 9:45 a.m. Monday at the Beaufort County Airport.

Deputies said in a statement that Dollenmeier was taken to the hospital after the crash but died about two hours later.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating. Authorities say he was practicing takeoffs and landings when he crashed.
