KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Some fire and law officials in one Tennessee county plan to encrypt their radio communication.
The Knoxville News Sentinel reports the Knoxville fire and police departments and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office are set to make the change this year. Police Chief David Rausch said Tuesday his department will encrypt all radio communications by August. Sheriff Jimmy “J.J.” Jones says he will also be encrypting radio communications, but doesn’t have specifics. Capt. D.J. Corcoran says the fire department will encrypt a single channel used to relay patient information.
The chief and sheriff both say encryption will stop criminals from using scanners to monitor law enforcement. The cost of encryption will be in addition to the cost of the county 911 center’s new $8.7 million digital system purchased in 2016.
