PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A private university in Maine is launching a graduate program about ocean food systems as part of a new institute designed to foster partnerships between Maine and the North Atlantic and Nordic states.

University of New England says the program will be one of the first at UNE NORTH: The Institute for North Atlantic Studies. The school says the program will partner the school with Icelandic universities to train students for Maine’s seafood economy.

The university announced the institute’s creation in Portland earlier this month. The school says the institute seeks to train “the next generation of leaders to develop research, industry and community partnerships” throughout the North Atlantic.

UNE President James Herbert says Maine and the North Atlantic states have similarities in terms of demographics, geography, climate and culture.
