HELENA, Mont. (AP) - An eastern Montana sheriff’s deputy, who had been running for sheriff, faces a charge of sexual abuse of a child.

State prosecutors allege former Valley County Undersheriff Luke Strommen requested an illicit image of a 17-year-old girl via text and received it via email in April 2014. He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance in Glasgow on Tuesday.

The girl told investigators she was engaged in a consensual relationship with Strommen, who was 36.

Strommen was placed on paid administrative leave in June and removed his name from the ballot for sheriff in August.

The Department of Justice said the case was appointed to the public defender’s office, which declined to comment.
