WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - A Massachusetts man charged with fatally beating and stabbing his mother will undergo an evaluation to determine if he is mentally competent to stand trial.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that 27-year-old John Madulka, of Worcester, was committed to Bridgewater State Hospital on Wednesday. Madulka has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of 56-year-old Ellen Madulka in December.

Madulka’s lawyer, Michael Hussey, requested his client be committed for the evaluation. Hussey says Madulka has a history of mental illness.

Prosecutors say the suspect hit his mother 10 times with a metal object and stabbed her multiple times. Madulka’s father called 911 to say his son called him and told him he had killed his mother. Investigators found John Madulka at a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts.
