It seems like just yesterday that Washington Capitals fans rallied in the National Mall and cheered on their beer-soaked Stanley Cup champions.

In fact, it was nearly four months ago, and hockey season has arrived once again. The NHL season begins tonight with a slate of games that includes the Capitals’ home opener — their chance to raise their Stanley Cup banner in front of what’s sure to be a packed arena.

If you’re not going to the game, here’s how to watch and what to watch for.

What to watch for: The banner-raising ceremony is scheduled for 7:15 p.m., and the puck should drop sometime after 7:30. … The Capitals will start the season with just six healthy defensemen on the roster, as Michal Kempny was placed on injured reserve. Coach Todd Reirden said that he will pair Christian Djoos with John Carlson and Madison Bowey with Brooks Orpik for the season opener. … Reirden also said Brett Connolly will “get the first crack” at moving into the top forward line if and when Tom Wilson is ruled out. Wilson has an in-person hearing with the NHL Department of Safety in New York.
