Democratic committee chairs announced a probe Monday into President Trump’s nascent plan to ship illegal immigrants away from the border and release them into sanctuary cities, calling the proposed move “alarming.”

“Not only does the administration lack the legal authority to transfer detainees in this manner, it is shocking that the president and senior administration officials are even considering manipulation release decisions for purely political purposes,” said Reps. Jerrold Nadler, Elijah E. Cummings and Bennie G. Thompson, chairs of the Judiciary, Homeland Security and Oversight committees.

They demanded to see the email traffic between the White House and Homeland Security over the proposal, as well as any documents produced at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement designed to study the plan.

Mr. Trump last week confirmed he is considering the move to take illegal immigrant children and families being caught by the thousands each day at the U.S.-Mexico border and ship them to sanctuary cities.

Most of those migrants right now are being processed and released into border communities, straining the resources of those areas.

Mr. Trump said sanctuary cities should gladly welcome them.

The Democratic chairmen said Mr. Trump was treating the children and families as “pawns” in a political game.
