PURVIS, Miss. (AP) - Authorities say a south Mississippi man fatally shot a man, wounded a woman, and led police on a chase that ended when he rammed a police car.
Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel tells WDAM-TV that 30-year-old Norman Andrew Whiddon of Purvis killed 47-year-old James Edward Herrin on Saturday night.
Herrin was standing outside his Lumberton home, and Rigel says a woman standing on the porch was wounded with multiple shots.
Fleeing in a pickup, Whiddon evaded spikes that deputies placed across the road to flatten his tires. He later crashed head-on into a Purvis police car.
Rigel says Whiddon and the officer suffered minor injuries.
Whiddon remains jailed without bail in Lamar County. It’s unclear if he has a lawyer. He’s charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and felony eluding.
