PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Police say a mother has been charged with murder in the death of her newborn son.

Police say 21-year-old Ginalys Velazquez Camara delivered the baby at a Providence apartment with no medical assistance March 23 and didn’t take the baby to a hospital. Police say she didn’t care for the newborn in the days following his birth. She’s charged with felony first-degree murder.

Neighbors alerted police. The baby was found unresponsive March 30.

Major David Lapatin told WPRI-TV that if you neglect a child to the point that the child dies, it’s murder.

Velazquez Camara was arraigned Wednesday and ordered held without bail. She didn’t enter a plea and was referred to the public defender’s office.

A lawyer who could comment on her behalf couldn’t immediately be reached.
