AIKEN, S.C. (AP) - Aiken County has sworn in a longtime law enforcement officer as its new coroner.

Darryl Ables took the oath of office Thursday morning.

Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Ables to finish the last year of Coroner Tim Carlton’s term. Carlton died from cancer on Feb. 18 and Ables was his chief deputy coroner.

The 53-year-old Ables told the Aiken Standard he plans to run for a full four-year term in 2020.

Ables started his career as a law enforcement dispatcher in the mid-1980s rising to a sheriff’s office investigator.

Ables said he joined the coroner’s office in 1989 thinking it was another step in his career, but he says he discovered it was the perfect fit for him.
