MONROE, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina sheriff’s office has charged a man with first-degree murder after his son was found dead inside his home.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says on its Facebook page that 30-year-old Alden John Whitehead is also charged with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury in the death of Louis-Charles Gilbert Chenier.

Investigators say the toddler’s mother found him unresponsive on a bedroom floor when she arrived at Whitehead’s home in Indian Trail on Sunday to pick him up. According to investigators, Whitehead was in another part of the home.

The toddler’s mother, who lives at a different address, called 911, but when emergency personnel arrived, they determined the child was dead.

Whitehead is jailed without bond. Online records don’t show whether he is represented by an attorney.
