BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The state’s historic preservation officer says the events at the Bennington Battle Monument this weekend marking the anniversary of the 1777 Battle at Bennington will include the sound of a Revolutionary War cannon.

Laura Trieschmann told the Bennington Banner that the cannon will be part of the festivities.

The state had considered banning cannon firing during the events after two residents complained but then dropped the idea when Trieschmann said the state was flooded with emails and letters in support of keeping the cannon fire.

A weekend of events is planned around the Bennington Battle Monument, including Revolutionary War re-enactors and a 5-kilometer road race. Trieschmann said earlier this week that the cannon was expected to be fired for the start and end of the race and twice on Sunday.
