MAULDIN, S.C. (AP) - A man who shot his former girlfriend through her car window and then fled the country for 17 years is going to prison after pleading guilty, officials said.

Local news outlets reported that prosecutors from the Thirteenth Circuit Solicitor’s Office said in a news release that Reynaldo Ramon Pimienta pleaded guilty Thursday in connection with the 2000 shooting that left the woman permanently paralyzed in her lower body.

According to prosecutors, Pimienta followed his ex-girlfriend on her way home from work, pulled up next to her at a stop sign and shot into her vehicle.

He then fled the country and was on the run for years. At one time he was believed to be as far away as Spain, and was on the FBI’s most wanted list. Then in October 2017, he was located in Colombia when authorities used a cell phone he was using to nail down his location. The show was featured on “America’s Most Wanted,” and multiple law enforcement agencies worked to apprehend Pimienta.

He was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and sentenced to 22 years.
