Sarah Huckabee Sanders, President Trump’s former press secretary, apologized after mocking White House hopeful Joseph R. Biden for stuttering during Thursday’s Democratic debate.

Mrs. Sanders atoned on Twitter amid coming under fire for taking a swipe at Mr. Biden, who has publicly discussed struggling to overcome a vocal stutter, after the Democratic front-runner and former vice president imitated a child with a speech impediment while speaking on the debate stage.

In a since-deleted tweet, Mrs. Sanders quipped: “”I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I hhhave absolutely no idea what Biden is talking about. #DemDebate”

Mr. Biden responded to Mrs. Sanders soon after through his own Twitter account, tweeting: “I’ve worked my whole life to overcome a stutter. And it’s my great honor to mentor kids who have experienced the same. It’s called empathy. Look it up.”

“I actually didn’t know that about you and that is commendable,” Mrs. Sanders later responded. “I apologize and should have made my point respectfully.”

Mr. Biden was among seven Democratic candidates who participated in Thursday’s sixth televised primary debate. His experience with stuttering was the subject of a lengthy profile published last month by The Atlantic.
