ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The deadline for people to apply for a vacant Albuquerque-area seat in the state Legislature has been extended.

The Bernalillo County Commission is meeting Jan. 7 to appointment a replacement for Democratic Rep. William Pratt, who died last week from complications related to a stroke. He was 84.

The deadline for applications now is Jan. 6, a week later than the original Dec. 30 deadline.

Pratt served in a northeastern Albuquerque district where registered Republicans slightly outnumber Democrats. At least two Republicans and two Democrats have indicated they’ll run for the seat in 2020 after Pratt said he would not seek reelection.

Until then, the commission is tasked with filling the District 27 seat in the House of Representatives. Applicants must live within the district’s boundaries and be at least 21 years old.

There are 45 Democrats and 24 Republicans in the state House.
