JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee man has been convicted of attempted murder in a 2015 shooting that wounded two people including a sheriff’s deputy.

News outlets report a Washington County jury rendered the verdict on Thursday for 39-year-old Kelly Lee Pitts after a four day trial.

Prosecutors say Pitts shot Carter County Deputy Jenna Markland and another woman when authorities responded to a call of a drunken man waving around a gun at a Carter County home.

Pitts testified during the trial that he wasn’t sure who was at the edge of his driveway when he began shooting and didn’t mean to hurt anyone.

Public defender Melanie Sellers said the verdict was disappointing.

Carter County Sheriff Dexter Lunceford said in a statement that his office was “glad to see justice was served.”
