PHOENIX (AP) - Police say man has been taken to the hospital with critical injuries after being hit by a light rail train in downtown Phoenix.

The incident occurred shortly before noon Wednesday as the train was pulling into the station at 1st Avenue and Van Buren.

Police say the train collided with a 54-year-old man who fell on to the tracks in front of the train.

Initially, it was reported the man jumped in front of the train.

However, police say it appears he may have tripped and fallen in front of the train.

Police say the man became trapped under the light rail and had to be extricated.

He was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition, but is expected to survive.
