NEW YORK (AP) - The City University of New York system says it has appointed the president of Queens College to serve as the school’s next chancellor.

CUNY’s Board of Trustees voted Wednesday to approve the appointment of Felix Matos Rodriguez. The 56-year-old Matos Rodriguez will be the first-ever Latino chancellor of the school system.

He will begin his new post on May 1, taking charge of the college system’s 11 senior colleges, seven community colleges and a swath of graduate and professional education schools.

Before his leadership role at Queens College, Matos Rodriguez served as a professor and director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College and as president of CUNY’s Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College.

Matos Rodriguez says the appointment is particularly special because “CUNY is home.”
