JENA, La. (AP) - Louisiana State Police say a 13-year-old boy died when his ATV moved from the shoulder of a state highway into the path of an empty log truck.

Master Trooper Scott Moreau says in a news release that the trucker was unable to avoid hitting the ATV driven by Wayden Savell of Jena.

He says the accident happened Wednesday afternoon. The boy was thrown from the ATV and died at the scene on Louisiana Highway 772 east of Jena.

Moreau says Savell was not wearing a helmet. He says it’s illegal to drive ATVs and other off-road vehicles on any public roadway in Louisiana.
