SURGOINSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A mudslide in Tennessee has left one driver dead and another injured and closed a highway.

Hawkins County Emergency Management Director Gary Murrell told The Kingsport Times News that the body was recovered from a vehicle around 11:45 a.m. Thursday. The injured motorist was hospitalized after climbing down the side of Clinch Mountain.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol said the man who died was 62-year-old Steven Lawson of Jonesborough. The report said his vehicle rolled down a 200-foot embankment and landed on its top.

Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson said the mudslide occurred Thursday morning on State Route 70 and involved two cars. He said the road is blocked off to other traffic.

Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesman Mark Nagi said the agency had engineers on site working on preliminary evaluations of the mudslide.
