The Maryland Terrapins were one major beneficiary of a big shake-up in the latest men’s college basketball poll.

The Associated Press Top 25 has Maryland up seven spots to No. 17 after beating previously-ranked Iowa on the road and handling Ohio State at home.

And with Duke losing to North Carolina after Zion Williamson’s injury, the nearby Virginia Cavaliers have passed them and earned the No. 2 ranking, their highest of the year.

Gonzaga is the new No. 1 in the country and Duke fell to No. 3.

Maryland (21-7, 12-5 Big Ten) jumped over teams such as Iowa, Louisville (which tumbled out of the rankings after big losses), Florida State, Virginia Tech and Cincinnati. The Terrapins are rising in the eyes of bracketologists, too, as ESPN’s Joe Lunardi peg them as a fifth seed in the NCAA Tournament and NCAA.com’s Andy Katz sees them as a No. 4.

Maryland’s next game is Wednesday night at Penn State. Virginia hosts Georgia Tech the same night.
