HURRICANE, W.Va. (AP) - Police in West Virginia have released the name of a suspect who was fatally shot by officers after a car chase that ended in a crash.

The Herald-Dispatch reports state police identified the man as 42-year-old Kevin Shawn Hanson of Huntington.

Authorities say after Hanson’s vehicle crashed, a Hurricane police officer approached and was shot in the leg. Putnam County Sheriff’s deputies and Hurricane police returned fire, hitting and killing the suspect. He died Jan. 7.

The wounded officer, Sgt. Phillip Armentrout, was treated at a hospital and released.
