WARWICK, R.I. (AP) - A former Cranston police officer has pleaded no contest to charges he broke into cars parked outside a church to steal cash.

Carmine Giarrusso was arrested in the parking lot of St. Philip Catholic Church in Smithfield on Dec. 30 after witnesses reported that a man had rifled through unlocked cars.

The Providence Journal reports he faced multiple counts of larceny.

He pleaded no contest to the charges Tuesday.

The judge ordered the 56-year-old Giarrusso to pay court costs.
