WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A Florida man has been convicted of causing a crash that killed a 5-year-old boy while fleeing police.
The Palm Beach Post reports that 23-year-old Lex Eugene was found guilty Wednesday of vehicular homicide and several other charges.
Prosecutors say a Boynton Beach police officer tried to stop Eugene in 2016 after spotting his speeding SUV. Eugene reportedly sped away when the officer approached. Eugene eventually lost control at an intersection and drove up on a sidewalk.
Authorities say the SUV hit Jayden Readon, who was walking to a nearby park with his family. The force of the crash sent the boy into the air. He ended up in a ditch about 20 feet (6 meters) away.
