BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The University of Vermont Medical Center says it is backtracking on thousands of dollars in billing that came under question in recent weeks.

WCAX-TV reports the Friday announcement comes after an investigation into those bills, which nearly 2,000 patients got last month. One patient, Dennis Grover of Burlington, says he previously paid a bill in full in 2017, only to receive another bill 20 months later citing an internal billing error.

UVM Medical Center Chief Financial Officer Rick Vincent says the bills were intended to be refunds, due to insurance payment errors and the re-billed patients won’t have to pay.

Vermont Health Care Advocate Mike Fisher is concerned that if patients hadn’t complained they may have paid out money that they didn’t need to pay.
