CRETE, Neb. (AP) - Crete Mayor Roger Foster has died after a battle with lung cancer. He was 50.

Volzke Funeral Home in Seward says Foster died Wednesday in Crete. He had been mayor of Crete since 2010. Before that, he spent three years on the Crete City Council.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that Foster devoted his life to public service following the death of his 8-year-old daughter, Alexa, in 2004 when a cinder block wall collapsed while she was refilling a water gun in a public park bathroom. After learning there was no state law mandating inspections of small public buildings, Foster founded “The Alexa Check,” to encourage people to look for and report hidden dangers in public places. He also pushed for a state law that would hold cities, counties and other public entities accountable for some accidents that occur in public parks or buildings.

Foster is survived by his wife, Julie, and daughters Jasmine and Brooke.
