AVALON, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say one person has been killed in the crash of a helicopter on Santa Catalina Island off the Southern California coast.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department says the smoldering crash site was located Tuesday during a search at the northwest end of the island.

Officials confirmed one fatality but did not identify the person.

A search was launched hours earlier after a pilot was reported missing. The Coast Guard tells the Los Angeles Times that the helicopter took off on Monday and its home port is in Torrance, south of Los Angeles.

Officials did not immediately have details on the aircraft’s intended destination.
