BROOKHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - A Mississippi judge has denied bond for a man charged in the shooting death of a 7-year-old boy.

The Daily Leader reports 24-year-old John Weathersby of Wesson appeared Tuesday before a municipal judge in Brookhaven, the city where Quantavious Allen Jr. was killed June 12.

A police affidavit says Weathersby used an AK-47 to shoot at Allen’s father’s house. The boy was hit while playing a video game in the living room. His 5-year-old sister was playing nearby and their father was in a bedroom. Quantavious was flown to University of Mississippi Medical Center, where he died.

Weathersby is in the Copiah County Jail, and a preliminary hearing is July 9.

Weathersby said he would hire his own attorney, but it was unclear whether he had done so by Wednesday.
